I think it is actually the caiptalist system which rests on republican government. Without protection of the private ownership of production means, capitalism just isn't capitalism. Protection of private ownership requires the political power (as opposed to political rights) necessary to mobilize society around a certain set of norms (among them the norm that individuals can make ownership claims to things like land which other societies would place in communal hands). Arguably, capitalism developed first, and caiptalists then gradually put together governmental systems which protect their economic power by giving them political power. Mostly, this consisted of wresting political power from monarchs and placing it in the hands of elites who claimed to represent the people. A look at the discussion of the American founding started by Charles Beard in An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States should make you think even if you find both sides less than convincing. Though his thesis met serious challenges, it is reasonable to think that the Constitution could as likely have been a result of the frustration felt by the entrepreneurial class engaged in trade and commerce, who, because of the lack of an effective national government, suffered most from the chaotic economic conditions that plagued the country in the 1780s as by an idealistic desire to promote democratic ideals. The Framers needed rule makers who could set the conditions for the explosion of capitalism, and Hamilton won the debate with Jefferson. A similar debate unfolds today in China, as a developing entrepreneurial class challenges the communist government. Where China's government goes will say a lot.
